Madhubani. You won’t believe it when you hear it. But it is absolutely true. There is a village in Madhubani district of Bihar where people still talk in Sanskrit. Not only talk but also debate. They consider it their primary language. Every year Sanskrit scholars from entire Mithila and the country come here for two days and debate in Sanskrit.

This is Thadi village of Madhubani district. People of 12 castes live in this village. Most of them are Brahmin families. People here still choose Sanskrit as their first language. Their Sanskrit is so good that many people are serving as Sanskrit teachers in universities and schools. They are connecting the new generation i.e. their children with Sanskrit.

Shastrartha in Sanskrit
The Sanskrit of the people of Thadi village is so rich that every year they organize a state function of Sanskrit. Scholars from all over Mithila as well as from all over India come to participate in this function. Every year on 16th and 17th March, scholars from all over the country hold debates (shastrartha) in Sanskrit. All Sanskrit speakers of the village participate in it.

How are the people here
The lifestyle of the people of the village is also very traditional. They are connected to their ancient Sanatan culture. The people here adopt the old Mithila culture and wear dhoti, paag and dupatta as their main clothes. This somehow gives the feeling of Mithilaanchal. The villagers tell that people here also appear in UPSC and BPSC examinations with Sanskrit as a subject.
